Lenticular clouds usually form down above or down wind from mountains. Usually there is only a few layers, but Anchorage also tends to form multiple inversion layers. These hold bands of moisture, so when the atmosphere is lifted (and hence temperature drops) there is condensation around the boundaries of the layers.
