| Disappointment. I've been looking for a second camera body for a while. My hope was that the D90, just announced, would follow in the footsteps of the D80. I think Nikon came close, but missed the mark on this one. The genius of the D80, was that it took all the power of the D200, and put it in a smaller and lighter package for people like me who don't plan to drop or soak our cameras. The only real compromises the D80 made were in durability and continuous shooting rate. The D90 follows this pattern by bringing the screen and sensor over from the D300, but it left the auto focus sensor behind. And, from the reviews and user opinions I've seen, the new auto focus system is a major contributor to the increased usability of the D300 (and D3 and D700). Without this part, the D90 is primarily an upgrade in terms of output quality - not usability. So, what am I going to do? Nothing. For the moment anyway. I'm probably going to wait and see what prices do over the next six months. Maybe the D300 will come down enough that I can justify it for my hobby. Or maybe I'll get lucky and find one used. |
